Project
Hand Picking Asbestos
Contamination of crushed concrete and soils due to unregulated building demolition and historical spillage of pesticides at the site.
Contaminant
Asbestos and Lindane.
Challanges
The site was highly sensitive due to the position within Somerton and intense local interest. A mobile plant license was needed to deal with the asbestos as well as continuous asbestos monitoring, validated by the local Environmental Health Officers. Two areas of contamination were identified, one as a discreet layer through the soils, the other throughout a concrete pile.
Churngold Solution
Stockpile of buried drums
In the first instance Churngold Remediation had to develop the remediation strategy and then get it approved by the Local Environmental Health Officer. In addition the Environment Agency had to be satisfied with the strategy particularly with regard to the identification and disposal of lindane contaminated soils as the site had previously been under investigation for a pesticide spill that had resulted in contamination of the nearby river and the subsequent loss of fish stock.
The concrete was screened and then riddled, with the fine material being exported from site as asbestos contaminated and the coarse material being handpicked for large pieces of asbestos. The soils surrounding the asbestos layer were stripped away, with each bucket load being checked for asbestos. The asbestos layer and any areas in which asbestos was concentrated, were removed and exported to a licensed disposal facility. The site was then reprofiled to suit the client’s requirements and a comprehensive validation report with full audit trail provided.
