Client: Stroud District Council

Consulting Engineer: ESI

Location: Gloucestershire

Value: £15K

Project:

The gas works, which was operational from 1860 into the mid twentieth century, comprised a rectangular plot of land of approximately 1500m2. The site had been sequentially developed for housing over the last 30 years and four residential dwellings, including associated gardens, currently occupied the plot.

Contaminant:

Elevated PAHs, including benzo[a]pyrene, was detected in the majority of soil samples taken from one residential garden.

Challenges:

Due to the occurrence of potentially harmful PAH concentrations, including benzo[a]pyrene within the boundaries of one cottage, the site had been determined as contaminated land by the local authority under Part 11A of the environmental protection Act 1990. Reinstatement and landscaping had to be completed to a high standard within a very restricted site with the residents still living on site.

Churngold Solution:

The site was cleared, fences and patios removed and the contaminated soils excavated and disposed to landfill. Imported soils, which were compliant with DEFRA topsoil regulations, were then utilised on site.

Technologies Employed:

  • Contaminant classification
  • Landfill disposal
