Permeable Reactive/Barrier Walls & Capping

Barrier wall and capping technology is used to break the 'source-pathway-receptor’ chain at a site.

permeablebarrierBarrier wall and capping technology is used to break the 'source-pathway-receptor’ chain at a site.

Often used where there is no possibility of economically removing the ‘source’ of contamination but a long term solution is required for contaminated groundwater flow.

Impermeable barriers/caps are designed as a ‘cut-off’ while a ‘reactive’ barrier is able to treat contaminated groundwater passing through it without significantly altering the existing hydrogeological regime. Reactive barriers need careful design relating to the level and mix of contaminants required to pass through the reactive media and the residence time required to effect sufficient reduction of the contaminant concentration while not impairing groundwater flow. Depending on the contaminant different media can be selected while multiple contaminant types can require more than one reactive media placed in series. Talk to our design team to determine which reactive barrier technique and media will meet your requirements.
