Churngold Construction strengthens commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, recognising the immense value that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and their families bring to both the construction industry and wider society.

As part of this commitment, Churngold is supported by dedicated Armed Forces Ambassadors within the business, helping to champion the Covenant in practice and ensure meaningful support is available across the organisation. These ambassadors play a vital role in guiding policy, raising awareness, and supporting those transitioning from military life into civilian careers.

Our ambassadors are Construction Manager (Wales) Shaugn Goodwin and Site Supervisor Jo Ross, whose careers reflect the strong alignment between military values and construction leadership.

Shaugn Goodwin joined the Armed Forces in 1985 as a Junior Leader, fulfilling his ambition to serve with the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards. Over a 13-year military career, he served as a mechanised infantryman across the UK and overseas, including postings in West Germany during the Cold War, Belize, the Falkland Islands and multiple tours in Northern Ireland as part of Operation Banner. His service also included ceremonial duties at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, alongside specialist training in Canada and Berlin.

After leaving the Army in 1998, Shaugn transitioned into construction, joining Churngold in 2000 as a labourer. Through dedication, experience and leadership, he progressed through the business and is now a Construction Manager, overseeing complex works across Wales. His journey reflects Churngold’s belief in providing long-term career opportunities and recognising transferable skills such as discipline, teamwork and resilience.

Jo Ross, Armed Forces Champion for England, brings a dual career background spanning nearly three decades in construction and active service with the Royal Marine Reserves. Having worked across the Bristol and Midlands regions, Jo progressed from brickwork into groundworks and supervision, gaining extensive hands-on and leadership experience. In 2016, he earned the Green Beret after completing the demanding Royal Marine Reserve training programme.

Jo understands first-hand the pressures of military life and the challenges of balancing reserve service with a civilian career. In his role as Armed Forces Champion, he is committed to supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families, offering guidance on employment opportunities within construction and helping individuals navigate the transition into civilian roles.

By signing the Armed Forces Covenant and appointing ambassadors like Shaugn and Jo, Churngold aims to go beyond words and deliver practical, visible support. We continue to promote fair treatment, flexible working where possible, and an inclusive culture that values the skills and experience of the Armed Forces community.

Churngold is proud to stand alongside those who serve and we look forward to continuing our work in supporting veterans, reservists and their families across the business and the wider industry.
