New Project - The New Ysgol Iolo School, Cowbridge
Churngold Construction are well underway on the new primary school Ysgol Iolo in Cowbridge working once again with Kier Construction in delivering high quality works from earthworks, substructures, drainage to hard finishings.
The new Ysgol Iolo School in Cowbridge represents an important investment in modern educational facilities for the local community, providing a high-quality learning environment designed to support pupils, staff, and future generations. As part of the wider development, the project required careful preparation of the site to create a safe, stable, and suitable platform for construction.
Churngold Construction played a key role in the earthworks phase of the project, bringing its experience in groundworks, site preparation, and bulk earthmoving to help shape the site ready for the new school buildings and associated infrastructure. The works involved the movement, management, and re-engineering of site-won materials, along with the formation of levels to suit the proposed development.
All excavations were carried out using 3D machine control technology, allowing plant operators to work directly to the digital design model with improved accuracy, consistency, and efficiency. This approach reduced the need for repeated manual setting out, helped maintain control over formation levels, and supported a more streamlined earthworks operation across the site.
UAV surveys were also used to maintain regular site records and monitor progress throughout the earthworks phase. These aerial surveys provided valuable daily information, including photographic records, progress tracking, and volumetric assessments. This allowed quantities to be reviewed accurately and gave the wider project team clear, up-to-date information on the movement of materials and the changing site profile.
Through accurate digital setting out, controlled excavation, machine-guided operations, and UAV-based monitoring, Churngold helped ensure that the groundwork phase progressed efficiently and in line with the project requirements. Their involvement contributed to establishing the foundations, external areas, and general site levels needed to support the successful delivery of the new school.
The project demonstrates Churngold Construction’s ability to support complex education-sector developments, combining technical earthworks expertise, modern surveying methods, and digital construction technology with a practical, collaborative approach on site.
