Project Overview

Client: Wainhomes / WCC

Project Name: Grovelands Way

Location: Warminster, Wiltshire

Engineer: The Engineer Studio

Sector: Housing

Project Value: £1.5M

Project Period: 34 weeks

To construct an adoptable road including drainage and mains services that runs through land north of Grovelands Way near Warminster to feed future housing plots and care homes.

The project included S278 improvements along the north and south of Grovelands Way as well as an S38 cycle path to the west and a hoggin footpath to the east. The EA design for the scheme required an extensive flood compensation area to be constructed to the west with the storm water discharged via the northern ditch.

Key work carried out

Adoptable Spine Road works include:

  • 2700x1180m 6ton culvert sections installed on an EA monitored watercourse, S278 and S38 road construction, Drainage works using preformed catch pits & MH’s all installed to adoptable standards

  • Main services installed in conjunction with Triconnex, GTC & SSE

  • Street lighting

  • Kerbing

  • Tarmac Surfacing

  • Landscaping

Churngold successfully managed

  • Constructing a road on a flood plain during the winter months, bordered on all sides by ditches and rivers.

  • Road constructed to the adoptable standard including a CBR of 30%+ from an original CBR of 0% using a specialist Tensar design geotextile.

  • The site had a sensitive eco system and ecology, which included a protected water vole species.

  • The local residents were opposed to the project but came to appreciate Churngold’s considerate approach which allowed a good relationship with the residents to be developed which will no doubt benefit any future works.

  • The original tight programme meant Wainhomes chose Churngold to help and assist them on this project due to Churngold proactive approach in overcoming delays in design sign off and approval. This included Churngold suggesting alternative design proposals to overcome both technical and programme issues.
