Earthworks contractor

Specialist earthworks contractor for complex and large-scale sites.

Churngold Construction is a specialist earthworks contractor working across the UK, from our headquarters in Bristol and regional offices in South Wales, Exeter and the Midlands. We move, reshape and stabilise ground at scale, turning difficult sites into safe, level, construction-ready platforms.

From bulk excavation and cut and fill through to soil stabilisation, contaminated material handling and muckaway, we manage the full earthworks scope under one contractor, with our own modern fleet of plant and experienced site teams.

New to earthworks, or want the technical detail on how cut and fill works? Our guide, Earthworks explained, from cut to fill, walks through the process.

Our earthworks services

Bulk excavation and muck shift

Large-scale excavation needs the right plant, accurate planning and operatives who understand ground conditions. We manage bulk excavation programmes from initial dig through to final formation levels, handling cut and fill balances, material segregation and spoil disposal across greenfield development, brownfield regeneration and major infrastructure.

Cut and fill

Cut and fill is where earthworks save or cost a project real money. We balance site levels by reusing excavated material on site wherever possible, reducing the import, export, cost and carbon that come with moving material off site. Our teams use GPS-guided plant and 3D machine control to hit design levels accurately and keep volumes tight, with survey and setting out control throughout the dig.

Soil stabilisation and ground improvement

Where ground is too weak or wet to build on, stabilisation makes it usable without the cost of dig and dump. We use lime and cement stabilisation to improve bearing capacity and reduce moisture, strengthening the ground in place to form reliable working platforms and capping layers.

Contaminated material handling and segregation

Many sites carry a legacy of contamination that has to be identified, segregated and managed correctly. We handle contaminated material in line with waste classification protocols, segregating for treatment, reuse or licensed disposal. On sites needing full treatment, this dovetails with our remediation service, so the earthworks and remediation scopes are managed together rather than handed between contractors.

Topsoil stripping, muckaway and materials logistics

We strip and stockpile topsoil for reuse or removal, and manage the logistics of getting material on and off site. Our muckaway operations keep the dig moving, with material movements planned to minimise lorry numbers, cost and disruption to the surrounding area.

Working platforms and haul roads

Safe, stable access is essential to keeping an earthworks programme running. We construct load-bearing working platforms and temporary haul roads to support plant and piling rigs, designed and maintained for the duration of the works.

Survey, setting out and volume control

Accurate earthworks start and end with accurate data. We use topographical surveys and 3D modelling to plan cut and fill volumes before work begins, then GPS machine control and ongoing survey to hit levels on site. Settlement monitoring tracks ground behaviour where it matters, giving early warning of issues before they reach the slab or road above.

FAQ

  • How much do earthworks cost?

Earthworks costs depend on the volume of material moved, the ground and contamination conditions, how much cut and fill can be balanced on site, and disposal requirements. The biggest lever on cost is early involvement, so volumes and material reuse can be planned before work starts. Contact our team for a project-specific estimate.

  • How long do earthworks take?

Programme depends on site size, ground conditions and the volume of material to move. Accurate survey and cut and fill modelling up front is the single biggest factor in keeping earthworks on programme.

  • Do you provide muckaway and material disposal?

Yes. We manage muckaway, materials logistics and licensed disposal as part of the earthworks package, including the segregation and handling of contaminated material where present.

  • What areas do you cover?

We work across the UK, with our headquarters in Bristol and regional offices in South Wales, Exeter and the Midlands.

  • Can you handle contaminated ground?

Yes. We segregate and manage contaminated material in line with waste classification protocols, and can deliver full treatment through our remediation service where required.

  • What is the difference between earthworks and groundworks?

Earthworks shape and prepare the ground: cut and fill, stabilisation and platforms. Groundworks build on it: foundations, drainage and substructure. We deliver both. For the full explanation, see our guide, Earthworks explained, from cut to fill.

Case Study Land East of Harry Stoke, Earthworks and Infrastructure

Client: WainHomes/SGC

Project Name: Land East of Harry Stoke

Location: Harry Stoke Bristol

Sector: Residential

Project Value: £5.1M

Engineer/Architect: Stantec / The Engineering Studio

Project Period: October 2020 to September 2024

Churngold delivered the £5.1M earthworks contract on the remodelled former Mulgrove Farm site, forming the platforms and levels that feed the wider housing development. The earthworks package was followed by a design and build contract for the adoptable spine road, with drainage and mains services, running through the regraded site to serve further housing plots.

Single contractor across the earthworks and the infrastructure that followed, keeping the programme continuous from formation levels through to adoptable road.
