Site preparation and clearance

Before any groundworks begin, the site needs to be safe, accessible, and ready for construction. Churngold delivers site preparation and clearance as a standalone package or as part of a wider enabling works scope, covering vegetation removal, demolition of redundant structures, grubbing out of existing foundations, and general site strip.

We manage waste streams responsibly, segregating materials for recycling or licensed disposal in line with current environmental regulations. Where asbestos or other hazardous materials are identified, we coordinate with specialist removal contractors to keep the programme moving without compromising safety.

Ground investigation

Understanding what lies beneath the surface is the starting point for every successful groundworks programme. Churngold supports ground investigation phases by facilitating access for geotechnical specialists, managing trial pit excavations, and interpreting results alongside the project design team.

Early involvement in the ground investigation stage allows us to identify risks, inform foundation design, and develop accurate cost plans before the main works begin. This pre construction engagement reduces the likelihood of unexpected ground conditions causing delays and cost overruns once on site.

Build excavation and earthworks

Large scale excavation demands careful planning, the right plant, and experienced operatives who understand ground conditions. Churngold manages bulk excavation and earthworks programmes from initial dig to final formation levels, handling cut and fill balances, material segregation, and spoil disposal.

On contaminated or sensitive sites, our teams segregate materials in accordance with waste classification protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance throughout. We operate our own modern fleet of plant and equipment to maintain quality and programme control across projects of all scales.

Foundation construction

Every structure depends on foundations engineered to match the ground conditions beneath it. Churngold delivers the full spectrum of foundation systems, from strip and trench fill foundations on stable ground through to reinforced raft slabs for sites with variable bearing capacity, and piled solutions where weaker soils or heavy structural loads demand deeper support.

Our team manages foundation selection as part of the wider groundworks package, coordinating with structural engineers and piling contractors to ensure the right system is specified and sequenced within the build programme. On complex sites, we regularly undertake pile cropping, pile cap construction, and ground beam installation as part of an integrated substructure delivery.

We work across residential, commercial, education, and infrastructure sectors, with recent foundation packages including university campus developments requiring concrete pours of 500m3 per day.

Drainage and ducting installation

Effective drainage is critical to the long term performance of any development. Churngold designs and installs complete foul and surface water drainage networks, including gravity systems, pumped solutions, and attenuation systems to meet local authority adoption standards.

Our ducting teams install service routes for power, telecoms, gas, and water alongside the drainage programme, reducing the need for return visits and keeping the critical path on track. We coordinate directly with statutory undertakers to ensure compliant connections.

From large residential infrastructure serving hundreds of plots through to single building commercial connections, our drainage capability covers every scale of project.

Temporary works and access roads

Safe access and temporary infrastructure are essential to keeping a site operational throughout the build programme. Churngold constructs temporary haul roads, working platforms, and site compound areas to support the main construction works.

We coordinate with the principal contractor to ensure all temporary structures are properly designed, checked, and maintained for the duration of their use.

Substructure and retaining walls

Churngold delivers reinforced concrete substructures including retaining walls, lift cores, basement structures, and below ground service corridors. Our teams manage formwork, reinforcement placement, and concrete pours as part of the groundworks package, providing a single point of responsibility from formation level through to slab.

On sloping or constrained sites, retaining wall design and construction is often critical to unlocking the development. We work with project engineers to deliver both temporary and permanent retaining solutions suited to the specific site conditions and structural requirements.

UXO detection and management

On sites with a history of wartime activity, unexploded ordnance (UXO) presents a serious safety and programme risk. Churngold coordinates UXO risk assessments and detection surveys as part of the groundworks programme, working alongside specialist engineers to ensure excavation and piling works proceed safely.

Our approach integrates UXO management into the construction programme rather than treating it as a standalone exercise, keeping disruption to a minimum.

Hard landscaping and final site finishes

Churngold completes the groundworks scope with hard landscaping and external finishing works, including kerbing, block paving, tarmac surfacing, fencing, and external drainage features. Delivering these elements as part of the groundworks package reduces the need for additional subcontractors and simplifies handover.

We coordinate final finishes with the wider build programme to ensure highway works, adoption requirements, and landscaping conditions are met ahead of practical completion.
